For my AS-level media studies coursework I chose to write, record and edit a two minute long, opening scene to a film. For this I decided to write an action movie opening as this is a genre of film I am interested in and know a lot about. However, even though I felt the final result was to a good standard, over the course of filming and editing I did encounter some troubles and problems.
For my coursework I worked with two other friends and we had difficulties with certain parts of our filming. The first problem we encounted was that the camera we were supplied with had problems recording in low level light. This was a huge problem as a good number of our shots were planned to be recorded at dusk, meaning when we recorded said shots, they often turned out being a virtually plain, black recoding. Another problem we faced was that our scenes were filmed on a public footpath, which resulted in having to re-record perfect scenes due to members of the public walking through the middle of our set.
Further problems occured when we started editing our film. One difficulty we faced was that our college center had very poor computer hardware, so we had to travel to another center to use hardware that could run the required editting software. This was frustrating as we didn't get the maximum amount of time possible to edit our film, therefore not being able to complete our coursework to the best of our ability.
For this new year of media studies I have once again decided to do a filming task, involving creating a music video for a song, a magazine article and a CD/DVD cover for the said song. I will once again be working in a group, however, this time with only one friend, Adam Lawson. You can find his coursework blog here.
